The Alexander Technique is a practical method of self-care that teaches you how to prevent misdirected muscular effort and unwanted strain in your body, both in activity and in stillness. It has a well-founded reputation for helping people with chronic back pain and other chronic joint-pain conditions.
It is also highly effective in helping with balance, coordination, posture and respiratory function. The Technique is applicable to any human activity, is completely safe to learn, and is useful to people of all ages, and from all walks of life.
Lessons in the Alexander Technique can help you do whatever you do, better, with less strain and greater confidence and satisfaction in moving safely and efficiently. Whether you’re working at a computer, hammering a nail, cooking, walking, exercising, speaking, or playing a musical instrument, you can use the Alexander Technique to optimize your experience.
By studying an applying the principles of the Alexander Technique you can:
- Significantly decrease or even eliminate chronic back, neck, hip and shoulder pain due to harmful habitual movement patterns
- Rediscover a light, buoyant and dynamic upright posture
- Improve the coordination and ease in how you sit, stand, walk and run
- Breathe naturally, fully and dynamically
- Exercise more safely and efficiently
- Improve your response to the stressors in your life
- Increase your awareness and cultivate your ability to be more fully present
- Improve your overall balance, mobility and stability
As I work with you, using a gentle, hands-on guidance and clear verbal instruction, you’ll learn to recognize and change the postural and movement habits that might be interfering with your built-in, natural poise. Because you carry out most of these habits unconsciously, they can be difficult to discern on your own. But the Alexander Technique provides a useful tool for you to notice and replace these unhelpful, unconscious habits with healthy, constructive, conscious choices.
I’ve been teaching this work both privately and institutionally since 2006, and continue to apply it daily as the foundation of my healthy lifestyle. I’m certified by the American Society for the Alexander Technique, having completed the required 1620 hours of formal training over a three-year period at The Alexander Training Institute of Los Angeles.
As an AmSAT Certified Teacher with years of experience helping people from all walks of life, I can help you “rediscover your natural poise”.
