Personal Fitness Training

Fitness is one of my passions, and sharing my skills and knowledge to help others get fit is a source of deep satisfaction for me. All of my work teaching exercise and movement is informed by the constructive principles of the Alexander Technique. This enables me to teach you how to exercise in a way that is in cooperation with your natural human design, optimizing safety, efficiency and success.

Though I was originally certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a personal trainer some years ago, I have since moved toward the study and application of “functional training”. This training approach improves upon and integrates the components necessary for optimal fitness and human movement function and overall health. As I work with you this way, you will improve your:

  • Muscular strength
  • Muscular endurance
  • Cardiorespiratory endurance
  • Balance
  • Mobility and flexibility
  • Agility
  • Speed
  • Core stability
  • Coordination
  • Cognitive capacity
  • Confidence

I also currently hold a certification from the Functional Aging Institute as a Functional Aging Specialist. This knowledge and these skill help me to design and implement safe, effective, sustainable exercise programs for older adults.

In functional training, I use many types of modalities and equipment, including resistance bands, free weights, various types of balls, balance surfaces, bolsters, blocks, and of course, your own body weight. The work is engaging, challenging, fun, and uniquely and dynamically designed for you. (It never gets boring!)

Besides improving movement function, this kind of training also improves several important physiologic components to improve your health, such as:

  • Increasing lean tissue mass while decreasing body fat
  • Lowering blood pressure and decreasing resting heart rate
  • Improving insulin sensitivity in order to lower blood glucose
  • Increasing Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) in order to increase the number of calories burned while at rest
  • Improving cholesterol
  • Increasing bone density
  • Improving the health and integrity of joints

I am also certified by the American Council on Exercise as an Orthopedic Exercise Specialist, and as a Function First Pain-Free Movement Specialist. This work involves the use of corrective exercise interventions to address chronic musculoskeletal pain and/or dysfunction. I apply this work strategically and compassionately, always putting your safety and comfort first.

My specialty is working with sedentary or de-conditioned older adults new to regular exercise.

I also warmly welcome those those who were once fit, but have become inactive and seek to restore or improve their fitness and function.

And if you’re already reasonably fit, I can help you reach higher levels of fitness and performance safely and effectively. A former competitive athlete, I still enjoy a robust level of fitness and function, and stay at the forefront of exercise and movement science.

I aim always to cultivate a safe and enjoyable exercise experience. I’ll custom design a program especially for you, tailored to your specific needs and wants.

I can work with you at my in-home exercise studio, or for an additional fee, I can come to your location. I use a minimal amount of equipment, so that if or when decide to train on your own, you won’t have to buy lots of expensive equipment or pay for a gym membership to continue staying fit.
